Whether you want to capture the romance of your wedding, the joy of your baby's smile, or the promise of your child's graduation, a professional photographer can create images that will tell your story. As a service to consumers, the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) has compiled the most often-requested information about selecting a photographer below.

Getting Started

The first thing to do is to make sure you choose a reputable professional. There are several ways to do this -- ask friends for a recommendation, call the Better Business Bureau or call 888-97 STORY for a free referral from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). PPA is the world's oldest and largest photography association and has more than 14,000 members, making it easy to find a qualified professional in your area. All photographers referred by PPA have agreed to abide by the Association's code of ethics.
The Professional Storyteller

Professional photographers are not people who simply take pictures, they are storytellers. These storytellers provide you with an enjoyable experience, while offering you both quality images and flexibility.

Those who have chosen photography as a career have the experience, training and equipment to offer you a variety of options. Many storytellers offer flexible hours and are willing to photograph you at your favorite location.

Preserving Special Moments

The images created by professional photographers touch every aspect of life. While many people immediately think of newborn babies and weddings, a professional photographer or videographers can preserve any memory that is important to you. Many parents have photographs created at different stages in their child's development, creating a "portrait history." Graduations, religious ceremonies, family reunions, pet portraits, birthdays, and anniversaries are some of the reasons people hire professional photographers.

Most businesses, large and small, use professional photographs for advertising their products -- whether in print, broadcast, catalogs or direct mail. Other business needs include videos, executive portraits and press release photos.
A Storyteller's Education

There is no single educational route to becoming a professional photographer. Many photographers gain their basic skills through apprenticeship programs or by earning a degree from a college or technical institute.

PPA members have access to a year-round continuing education program through the Winona International School of Professional Photography. This program helps photographers stay abreast of new techniques and technology.

PPA members also have the opportunity to earn professional designations and degrees. The PPA Certified designation indicates that a photographer has met strict requirements, proving his or her artistic abilities, technical expertise and business skills. PPA Certified photographers must remain active in a continuing education program to maintain this designation.

The Master of Photography, Master of Electronic Imaging, Photographic Craftsman and Master Artist degrees are earned by photographers who participate in educational courses and international print competitions.

While PPA degrees are indicators of high photographic achievement, they are not the only factors to consider when choosing your professional photographer.
Finding Your Storyteller

Interview several photographers. They should be willing to take the time to listen to what you want in photography, and ask questions about you and your family. A photographer needs this information to create images that tell the story of who you are, or who you would like to be. Keep in mind that you are not hiring someone to simply take a picture, but to tell your story.

As part of the interview you should ask to see some of the photographer's work. This will give you some indication of the photographer's style. You should let the photographer know what you have in mind, and ask if he or she has experience in that area.

For weddings, reunions and other events, always ask if the photographer carries back-up equipment. Also, make sure the photographer has a ready replacement who can photograph your event if he or she becomes ill.
The Business of Storytelling

Once you find a professional photographer who can tell your story, you should focus on the business aspects of hiring the photographer. Good communication is the key!

Most professional photographers will provide literature outlining the services to be provided and the fees involved. Make sure you understand the fees and ask the photographer to explain any items that you don't understand. This will help both of you avoid any misunderstandings.
Additional Services

Some professional photographers may provide specialized services in addition to photography. These services may include retouching, for removing blemishes or otherwise altering photographs; photograph restoration, which can help preserve memories from past generations; and custom framing, to make your portrait look its best. While your photographer may not offer all of these services, he or she can refer you to a quality vendor.

PPA, a worldwide association, exists to assist its more than 14,000 members in achieving their professional, artistic and fraternal goals; promote public awareness of the profession and to advance the making of images in all of its disciplines as an art, a science and a visual recorder of history.
