Landscape Photography by Hugh Hargrave
A workshop review by Scott Holleman
Attending Hugh Hargrave’s workshop on landscape and architecture photography was both informative and inspiring. We started the day out reviewing how to plan ahead for locations, from picking a season to time of day to gear necessities. Going over technical details, Hugh shared his workflow and several technical aspects that were easy to understand and remember.
Once our heads were a bit full of information, we headed out and roamed a few blocks around downtown Galveston, including the Tremont Hotel and the Trumpet building, looking for details and how to look for interesting lighting patterns. Hugh patiently worked with each student as needed to create images that would draw you in.
Afterwards, we took a meal break at Benno’s, discussing our thoughts from working downtown and looking forward to sunset images on the beach. About half an hour before sunset, we headed towards the east end. Hugh reiterated location, angles, and the best level to have your camera at for the best results. Some of us went on to Pleasure Pier for some night photography with good results. Galveston holds lots of opportunities and Hugh made great use of them.
Hugh made his workshop entertaining and informative. We all left with great inspiration to create our own portfolios for this genre of photography. If you ever want to start or refresh your vision in this field, Hugh is highly recommended.
