Creating Headshots in a Small Area by Laura Mansur Guerra
A workshop review by Brenda Kieso
Attendees of Laura’s workshop on Creating Headshots in a Small Area walked away with practical tips they could put to use right away. Laura made it clear from the start that photographers don’t need a huge studio or piles of gear to create professional-looking portraits — just a thoughtful approach to lighting.
She began with a simple one-light setup, demonstrating how shifting the position of a single light can completely change the mood of a headshot. Adding a reflector gave the images a softer, more balanced look, which is especially helpful in small spaces where shadows can easily become too harsh. From there, she introduced two-light setups and showed how adding a reflector can fine-tune the results even further.
The highlight came when Laura added a third light. Using a hair light or background light instantly added separation and depth, elevating the portraits to a polished, professional level. Each step built on the last, clearly showing how photographers can scale their lighting setups depending on space, equipment, or creative goals.
Throughout the workshop, Laura kept her instruction approachable and easy to follow. The most effective component was the hands-on aspect. At each set up, attendees were able to practice with their own camera, and actually see, in real time, what Laura was able to create. She is an incredible instructor, with an approachable manner that is unparalleled. Attendees left feeling confident that they could walk into any small space and deliver high-quality headshots without feeling cramped or limited by their gear. Thank you, Laura!
